Objective
The primary goal of this project was to acquire and internalize expert knowledge about sustainable indoor farming with an emphasis on seed saving. Since traditional methods of consuming information (e.g., reading long and complicated texts) had become tedious, I created an engaging podcast episode that would serve as a form of “edutainment” on the topic—allowing for both active and passive consumption of that expert-level knowledge.
Tools and Techniques
- ChatGPT
- I leveraged academically-documented prompt patterns to structure my prompts and extract high-quality responses.
- The knowledge base and resulting script were both improved with iterative refinement, and, by using my interests and current knowledge to guide the process, I have created something unique and memorable.
- ElevenLabs
- I used this straightforward tool to transform the script into a professional-sounding podcast episode.
- Microsoft Word
- I used this tool to preserve the content structure and format content when copy and pasting conversations from ChatGPT to ElevenLabs—adding human edits here and there.
Process
Step 1: Acquire and verify expert knowledge.
To build this knowledge base, I used ChatGPT’s o1 model.
Of course, there are many different ways I could have used this expert knowledge. For example, you might instead use it to identify topics for further exploration, guide a custom GPT to do any number of things (e.g., create games that draw on additional expert-level information to teach while entertaining the user, create dynamic quizzes that adjust themselves to help you identify weaker areas of knowledge, et cetera), and so on.
Step 2: Leverage the expert knowledge from Step 1 to write a podcast script.
To write this podcast script, I used ChatGPT’s 4o model.
Although this episode might not entertain everyone, I loved it; I even managed to make myself laugh hard once during my third listen. But that’s part of the beauty of AI tools! This podcast could have turned out any number of different ways—all depending on the interests, knowledge, and so on of the one who is writing the prompts. Try putting a little more of yourself (i.e., your personality, interests, desires, et cetera) into your next prompts—try doing it in different ways too—and see if you like the results more!
Step 3: Use ElevenLabs to create a podcast episode from the script.
The project’s outcome, a podcast titled “Grow Hard or Go Hungry,” is structured as a fictional yet informative dialogue between two characters: Marcus, the “Prepper King,” and Bob Jenkins—a humorous counterpart with little survival knowledge. This narrative effectively combined humor and technical expertise to explain complex topics like seed saving (e.g., timing, cleaning, drying, storage, et cetera), sustainable crop selection (e.g., quinoa, kale, bush beans, et cetera), and closed-loop farming systems (e.g., biogas digesters). Again, I could have adjusted my prompts to have explored different topics, another topic in greater depth, and so on; in this case, you get the rare opportunity to hear from Marcus, the “Prepper King,” and learn a bit about various topics in sustainable indoor farming.
One of the best parts about his whole project is that it only took me a little over 6 hours of work to complete.
